Why are large mailbox migrations different?
Migrating a small mailbox can be relatively quick, but accounts containing 20 GB, 50 GB or more require additional planning.
Message count, attachments, folder structure and source server performance all affect the time required to complete the migration.
Analyze before moving data
Folder count, message count and estimated storage should be identified before migration begins. This provides a clearer understanding of both migration duration and storage requirements.
Does every historical message need active storage?
Not necessarily. Older communication that is rarely accessed can be placed in archive storage while the active mailbox remains focused on current email.
Reducing downtime
Large migrations can begin while the existing mail server is still operational. Historical messages can be copied before the final DNS change and the new mail flow can be activated after preparation is complete.
MX1Mail provides an architecture suited to managing active business email separately from long-term historical archives.
