What Is an Email Blacklist and Why Does an IP Get Blacklisted?

28.09.2026 · 1 min read

An email blacklist is a data source that lists IP addresses or domains associated with unwanted mail, abuse or suspicious sending activity.

Why can an IP become blacklisted?

Spam campaigns, compromised accounts, insecure web applications and misconfigured infrastructure can all generate abusive outbound traffic.

Are all blacklists the same?

No. Different lists use different criteria. Some track broad reputation signals while others specialize in particular abuse patterns.

Can a blacklist affect delivery?

Some receiving systems use blacklist data as one of several filtering signals. Being listed does not necessarily mean that every provider will reject mail.

What should you do after a listing?

  1. Identify the source of the abuse.
  2. Stop the compromised account or application.
  3. Review server and account security.
  4. Follow the list provider’s removal process.

Removal alone is not enough

If the underlying cause is not resolved, the IP may be listed again.
